Module 3.3 Applying for Employment in Natural Gas
The natural gas industry offers a very broad range of jobs from which to launch or make your career. There are jobs that will suit men and women; individuals just starting out in their careers, and those transitioning from other industries. Jobs and careers will be different during exploration, construction and operations roles while some jobs and careers will support all three phases.
Across the industry, these jobs span a wide range of occupations that include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Well Services
- Trades
- Technicians
- Geoscience Professionals
- Engineers
- Operators
- Maintenance
- Marine & Nautical Services
- Business and Support Services.
The health of the industry—its ability to continue to grow and meet the challenges of the future—depends on employers being able to attract and hire individuals from all these occupations.
Tables 1 through 3 below show examples of occupations and jobs grouped by sector of the natural gas industry e.g.upstream, midstream, or downstream. Table 5 highlights some jobs that are common to the Upstream, Midstream and Downstream phases.
- Some occupations and jobs are unique to one stream (e.g. seismic and drilling), while others appear in two or even all three sectors (e.g. construction and maintenance trades, operators).
- Some jobs are in remote locations or require living in camps.
- Other jobs are in towns and cities near company offices, or processing and/or distribution facilities.
