In addition to ensuring your physical safety, employers are responsible for providing an environment that is safe from bullying, physical, and non-physical violence.

Learning Activity 2: Workplace bullying and lateral violence

Workplace bullying or lateral violence can be factors in safety at any company community any jobsite.

Instructions

  1. Consider your own experience with these two issues and answer the following question:
    • Have you witnessed, participated in, or been affected by either of these behaviors?
  2. Break into small groups and discuss 2-3 strategies for dealing with or managing these complicated situations

Learning Activity 3: Holding a Safety Meeting

In this activity, you will work with other students to hold a safety meeting and complete a Safety Meeting and Hazard Checklist. Use the Checklist form in Appendix A.

Instructions

  1. Watch videos 1, 2, and 3 and note how your instructor models how to lead a safety meeting.
  2. Divide into small groups and appoint one person to be the supervisor; the others can be workers.
  3. Take turns being the supervisor and leading the meeting, using the Safety Meeting and Hazard Checklist form in Appendix A.

Learning Activity 4: Completing a Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

This activity will help you to become familiar with conducting safety assessments at work sites.

Instructions

  1. Work in small groups.
  2. Identify an area of the building where your training is taking place and assess it for hazards.
  3. Write up your group’s assessment using the JSA form in Appendix A.
  4. Discuss your findings as a class.
