Midstream processing involves taking gas from the upstream sector, and further processing it to remove other impurities and by-products (e.g., ethane, propane, butane, condensate) or to prepare the gas for transportation and refining/distribution downstream.

Figure 1 shows the generic types of facilities which may exist in this definition of the midstream sector. In BC (and elsewhere) the activities denoted in Figure 1 may be considered to be upstream or downstream depending on how individual companies are structured.
